The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to declare a nationwide strike that will cripple the economy if the Nigerian Police detain its national president, Joe Ajaero, who was alleged to have been linked to terrorism financing and others.
To put its threat to reality, the union has placed its members and affiliates on red alert to prepare for withdrawal of services and shutdown the economy, in order to achieve their aim.
They alleged that the sudden summon of the president by the police was part of the Federal Government strategies of silent the union from advocating better wage policies for its members.
The threat was issued after an emergency meeting at the union headquarters on Tuesday as part of its resolution.
Addressing newsmen, the deputy president of the union, Adewale Adeyanju, said that the invitation of the NLC president was to harass Ajaero and other union members.
A crowd of unionists were seen gathered at the headquarters of the NLC in Abuja as the meeting was being held, singing solidarity songs.
The unionists said the strike would begin on Tuesday midnight “if anything happens to the president of the congress”.
The meeting came hours after the Nigerian Police Force summoned Ajaero for investigation over allegations of terrorism financing, treasonable felony and cybercrime.
The NPF invitation was contained in a letter dated 19th August 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team.
The summon had ordered the NLC president to present himself for questioning by 10:00 am today.
The police also warned that a warrant of arrest would be issued if Ajaero failed to comply.
