In a move to transform the country’s health sector, President Bola Tinubu has employed 774 Nigerian youths, previously selected from the National Health Fellows Programme, to work in Primary Health Care (PHC) across all Local Government Areas.
The 774 youths, representing each LGA across the country, were selected from 360,000 applicants and trained under the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office, to enhance accountability and efficiency in healthcare delivery,
Tinubu’s announcement came after the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, urged all tiers of government to integrate the fellows into the workforce to support Universal Health Coverage.

During the National Health Fellows Programme launch, which took place in Abuja on Thursday, the president stated that his vision for the initiative is to create a pipeline of health leaders capable of driving meaningful, sustained change and innovation within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Meanwhile, Pate, who championed the health program, noted that his ministry is working to accommodate the remaining applicants, enabling them to access online tools for self-development.
“But those who didn’t make it to the fellowship were also working to accommodate them as National Health Associates, so the more than 200,000 are now being pruned so they can have access to online tools to develop themselves as part of this movement that will transform the idea of accountability and delivery and service at our communities in line with your vision to transform Nigeria’s health sector, ” he added.
