As a measure to chart a proper road map for transportation in Lagos, the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled a new policy framework that will guide the continued development and regulation of the transportation sector in the state.
Sanwo-Olu explained that this policy encompasses the integrated multi-modal transport systems with a drive to ensure seamless connectivity between road, rail, and water transport modes across the state.
The governor, who noted that the policy which was the first in the country, appealed to the Federal Government to emulate the state and develop a policy that addresses the country’s transportation challenges.
As gathered, the policy framework, which is expected to be implemented within next 15years, would be reviewed every 5years to ensure it continues to remain relevant in transportation management in Lagos.
The state’s transport system has been divided into 14 elements in developing the policy with focus on Road infrastructure, rail transport, air transport, inland waterways transport, traffic management, public transport, urban road freight, non motorised transport, rail transport, among others.
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, unveiled the transportation policy on Tuesday in Ikeja, stressed that the policy is built upon a foundation of inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation.
“It embodies our commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable transportation options for all residents, regardless of their socio-economic status or location within the state. Moreover, it emphasizes the integration of our various modes of transport system.
“When we embarked on this journey four years ago, we made a solemn pledge to the people of Lagos: to revolutionize our transportation system, alleviate traffic congestion, and create a safer, more efficient, and sustainable environment for all.
“Today, as we unveil this policy, we are taking a significant step towards fulfilling that promise. This policy encompasses the Integrated Multi-Modal Transport Systems that ensures seamless connectivity between road, rail, and water transport modes.
“It will also encourage Sustainable Practices by Promoting environmentally friendly transportation options to reduce our carbon footprint.
“We are committed to implementing rigorous safety protocols to protect our commuters. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies, we aim to enhance traffic management and service delivery. Our goal is to ensure that the transportation system remains accessible and affordable for all residents, including the elderly and those with disabilities.
“This policy is not just a document; it is a roadmap to a brighter, more effective and efficient, sustainable future for Lagos. It reflects our vision of a state where transportation is no longer a challenge but a seamless experience that enhances the quality of life for all our residents”.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, explained that the framework will “addresses the challenges of today but also lays the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous tomorrow”
Osiyemi added: “The Lagos State Transport Policy represents a bold step forward in our collective efforts to transform the way we move people and goods within our city. Crafted through extensive consultation with stakeholders, experts, and citizens, this policy embodies our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and inclusivity in all aspects of transportation planning and management”.
