One dies during three-storey building collapse in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified woman has been confirmed to have died and scores of others sustained varying degrees of injuries after a three-storey building partially caved in on the occupants in Lagos State.

It was learnt that the deceased woman was passing by the structure occupied by many residents when the building partially collapsed on the occupants.

The building erected on No. 5 Alli Street in Ita Faaji axis of Lagos Island was said to have collapsed on Tuesday shortly after the rainfall recorded across the state.

The state emergency officials including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service and Rescue Service.and others were at the scene to rescue the injured victims.

Confirming the sad development, the Director, Lagos State Fire Service and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that the balcony of the building gave way suddenly.

Adeseye, in a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, said: “The collapse was partial. It was the balcony on the second floor that gave way. And the rubbles from the balcony hit a passersby by on the ground floor and she fell and later passed on.

“Aside from her, the injured victims, who were residents of the affected building, were rushed to a private hospitals where they are receiving medical care”, she added.
