JUST IN: Cross Rivers’ lawmakers impeach speaker over financial misconducts, others

By News Desk

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, has been impeached by lawmakers over alleged gross financial misconducts, incompetence and others.

Ayambem was impeached by 17 lawmakers who described the speaker’s leadership style as grossly crippling the progress of lawmaking in the state.

The speaker was impeached on Wednesday during plenary after 17 lawmakers signed a document to demand Ayambem’s removal and replacement by another senior member of the house.

The impeachment motion was moved by Effiom Ekarika representing Calabar South 1 Constituency and seconded by Omang Charles Omang representing Bekwarra State Constituency.

The motion threw the entire house into disarray with some lawmakers loyal to the former speaker restricting the move.

Ayambem was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023.

The Speaker represents Ikom 2 State Constituency in the Houses of Assembly.
