Court remands Gombe businessman over N14M fraud

By Awoniyi Ademide

A Federal High Court in Jalingo, Taraba State, has remanded a Gombe-based businessman, Habu Gambo, for allegedly collecting N14.9 million from a client in Gombe State.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gombe Zonal Directorate, arraigned Gambo before Justice Mashkur Salisu on a one-count fraud charge and obtaining money under false pretences.

According to the EFCC, Gambo, also known as Abubakar Gambo, allegedly obtained N14,907,000 from Sanusi Gado between November 2020 and February 2022 under the guise of investing in a grain trading business.

The charge states that the representation was false, violating Section 1(1)(b) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and is punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

The defendant yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him, prompting the prosecuting counsel, S.E. Okemini, to request a trial date following the plea.

However, defence counsel Sale Abdullahi filed a motion for bail, in which the prosecution defence cited Gambo’s earlier failure to comply with an administrative bail granted by the EFCC.

Justice Salisu denied the bail application and ordered that Gambo be remanded at the Jalingo Correctional Centre.

The case was adjourned to February 20, 2025, for the commencement of trial.
