Boko Haram kills 27 residents in Adamawa

Suspected fighters of Boko Haram have killed 27 residents of Shuwari Sholi in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State during a brutal attack that left dozens of homes destroyed.

Survivors said the attackers stormed the community on motorcycles, opened fire on civilians, and set houses ablaze in an assault that lasted several hours.

Among those reportedly killed was the village head, Bademi Papka, who was said to be related to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

An eyewitness, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the insurgents first targeted residents gathered near the market square before shooting indiscriminately at others in surrounding areas.

“They began shooting at people seated under a tree close to the market. Some of us escaped, but many were killed while trying to flee,” the witness said.

Residents said many villagers ran toward nearby hills and mountains in a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire.

Although security operatives were alerted during the attack, locals said troops arrived only after the assailants had withdrawn.

“We informed security forces immediately, but by the time they arrived, the attackers had already left,” another resident said, adding that fear still grips the community despite a gradual return to calm.

Confirming the incident, former Madagali council chairman Maina Ularamu said the attack occurred but noted that casualty figures were still being reconciled.

“Initial reports indicated about 27 deaths, but other accounts suggest higher numbers. We are working to verify the exact toll,” he said.
