Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has directed all political appointees in his administration intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 31, 2026.
The governor issued the directive during the 64th State Executive Council meeting, emphasising that it aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 polls.
Accordingly, he instructed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to formally notify all affected political appointees, while directing the Head of Service to extend the same instruction to civil servants aspiring to contest elections.
In his opening remarks at the meeting on Monday, Lawal stated that the move is necessary to ensure compliance with electoral laws and to allow appointees pursue their political ambitions without conflicting with their official responsibilities.
He further reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to serving the people of Zamfara State and advancing development across the state.
Meanwhile, the directive follows a similar order by President Bola Tinubu, who recently instructed all political appointees under the federal government seeking to contest in the 2027 elections to resign by the same March 31, 2026 deadline.
The presidential directive, conveyed through a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was also based on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC’s timetable for party primaries.
