The Zambian government has suspended financial support to it’s national team, Chipolopolo, following their 1-0 home defeat to Niger in the World Cup qualifiers and persistent poor performances.
The government made the announcement in a letter to the Zambian Football Association, ZFA, disclosing that despite continuous funding of the male team, the team has continued to wobble in results and soccer artistry, thereby, causing disrepute to the legacies garnered by the country’s past soccer heroes.
Sequel to the notice, the ZFA were told to rectify all internal issues and ensure that the team improves after finishing in fourth place in the World Cup Qualifying Group E consisting of Niger, Tanzania and Morocco, who qualified as first place team.
There are also speculations of a possible sacking of coach, Avram Grant, which has been extinguished by the ZFA President, Keith Mweemba.
Mweemba, on Tuesday, said that the Israeli tactician will remain as the national team coach. He said, “Grant is our coach, and he has a running contract. As a lawyer, I must respect that. We found him, he’s here, and contracts must be respected.
“He is a good man, open-minded and easy to work with. A coach’s contract is private. It’s not something for public debate. It would be unprofessional and disrespectful to discuss it in the media.”
