Wike, Turaki PDP factions begin reconciliation ahead 2027

The crisis rocking Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may be nearing a turning point as rival factions linked to Nyesom Wike and Tanimu Turaki have opened channels for reconciliation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This follows a directive by the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, which advised parties involved in the protracted dispute to explore peaceful resolution to preserve the party’s unity and electoral viability.

Acting on the court’s guidance, the PDP Board of Trustees, led by Adolphus Wabara, constituted a high-level reconciliation committee tasked with engaging aggrieved members and charting a path toward unity. The move is widely seen as a strategic effort to reposition the party ahead of crucial electoral contests.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, PDP National Chairman Turaki disclosed that initial steps taken by the National Working Committee (NWC), including the postponement of key meetings and a reduction in hostile rhetoric, were meant to demonstrate goodwill and create room for dialogue.

Although he noted that the gestures were not immediately reciprocated, with some factions continuing “hurtful rhetoric,” Turaki expressed cautious optimism about ongoing efforts.

“I can unequivocally confirm that leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways towards a lasting resolution,” he said, urging party supporters to tone down inflammatory statements that could derail the fragile peace process.

The reconciliation push comes amid growing concerns about the party’s preparedness for upcoming elections, especially given the tight timelines imposed by Nigeria’s Electoral Act.

However, Turaki reassured party faithful that the PDP remains committed to participating fully in the electoral process.

“We will field candidates for all elective offices,” he declared, emphasizing compliance with the party’s constitution.

Despite internal divisions, the PDP leadership maintained that its support base remains intact, citing continued interest from Nigerians registering through its e-platform. The party also reiterated its role as a critical opposition force, stressing that a healthy democracy depends on vibrant political competition and accountability.

Turaki further used the occasion to call on those in power to govern in accordance with the will of the people, noting that “ultimate power resides with the people.”

In a show of internal solidarity, the NWC passed a vote of confidence on key party figures, including Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, commending their leadership during the crisis.

Political observers say the success of the reconciliation effort could determine whether the PDP can mount a credible challenge in 2027 or risk further fragmentation.
