The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured members of the diplomatic community of the administration’s continued efforts to provide a safe and supportive environment for their operations in Abuja.
He stated that the FCT administration remains committed to strengthening security and improving infrastructure, noting that creating a conducive atmosphere for foreign missions is a key responsibility of the authorities.
Wike also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the government and diplomatic missions, saying sustained engagement would enhance mutual benefits and support Abuja’s standing as a global capital.
The minister made the remarks at the European Union Complex in Abuja during the Saint Patrick’s Day reception and the inauguration of the new Embassy of Ireland, according to a statement issued on Thursday by his aide, Lere Olayinka.
“We owe you a duty to make sure that we create the right environment for you to work and thrive. I want to assure you that we want to make Abuja one of the best capital cities in the world.”
“We will continue to provide an enabling environment for you to carry out your duties, especially in terms of security. Of course, you will attest to the fact that things have improved in Abuja since Tinubu’s administration came on board. We will keep improving every day,” he added:
Wike also urged foreign missions to develop lands allocated to them to prevent encroachment, stressing the enforcement of regulations:
“Of course, you know me very well, the law must take its course. We had to tell them enough is enough. My face may not be liked by many people, I don’t care, I will continue to do what is right.”
He further disclosed that affected missions had been contacted to reclaim and utilise their plots, noting:
“We have written to the affected embassies to come and collect their lands back and develop them.”
The event was attended by Ireland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Ryan, and Minister Jack Chambers, with Wike hinting at a possible visit to Ireland following an invitation and expressing confidence in strengthened bilateral engagement.
