The West African Examinations Council has introduced a new digital certificate services platform aimed at simplifying access to examination credentials, allowing candidates and institutions to retrieve, verify and securely share official academic records through an integrated online system.
The initiative, known as WAEC DigiCert, is structured as a mobile and web application built to serve students, schools and other stakeholders by streamlining certificate management and reducing delays linked to traditional documentation procedures and physical processing.
According to the council, the platform supports several user functions and is intended to modernise certificate handling while preserving document integrity, helping users confirm authenticity and recover missing examination details through a centralised digital interface.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council announced that the service has been rolled out across its member countries, including The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, marking a region-wide expansion of the digital framework.
Explaining the system’s capabilities, WAEC said, “It is designed to offer sample features that enable users to access, request, confirm or share digital forms of the original certificates. Users can also recover lost WAEC examination numbers on the system.”
The council added, “The system is reliable, the authenticity of the certificates is guaranteed, and the cost benefits to users cannot be overstated. Following its successful pilot in Nigeria, WAEC DigiCert received positive feedback from candidates and educational institutions worldwide.”
Encouraging adoption, WAEC stated, “The general public and all stakeholders are advised to use WAEC DigiCert to avoid administrative challenges and bottlenecks associated with manual certificate issuance and collection.
The Council wishes to assure the general public that the usual printing and issuance of certificates will not be affected by this innovation.
