The United States is considering a major escalation in its ongoing conflict with Iran by deploying thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, giving President Donald Trump’s administration expanded military options as the war enters a potentially more intense phase.
This development comes as the Iran war, launched on February 28, 2026, enters its third week, with the U.S. having conducted thousands of strikes aimed at countering Iran’s attacks on shipping and securing critical global energy routes in the region.
The proposed troop deployments are intended to bolster current operations and provide Trump with additional options as he weighs the next steps, although no final decisions have been made regarding the scale or specific missions.
According to multiple sources on Thursday, including U.S. officials and people familiar with the discussions, potential missions under consideration include securing safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a task currently reliant on air and naval forces but which could require deploying troops to Iran’s shoreline.
Discussions have also touched on possible ground operations on Kharg Island, which handles 90% of Iran’s oil exports, as well as securing Iran’s stocks of highly enriched uranium to prevent nuclear advancement.
One U.S. official described a potential deployment to Kharg Island as “very risky,” citing Iran’s ability to strike the site with missiles and drones.
The conflict has already claimed 13 U.S. troop lives and wounded approximately 200 others, highlighting the high stakes as Washington evaluates further commitments to achieve its objectives against Tehran.
Officials stress that any ground troop involvement carries significant military and political risks, with the administration continuing to assess the best ways to respond to Iran’s resilience and ongoing disruptions to international shipping.
