UPDATED: EFCC chairman receives medical care after collapsing in Aso Villa

By News Desk

The Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has been hospitalised after he was reported to have slumped during a presentation on the National Identity card exercise.

Bawa, who was speaking on the achievements of the anti-graft agency under his tenure, suddenly stopped and told the gathering he could not continue the presentation.

The chairman was discovered to have become uncomfortable and was assisted to his seat by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, and other senior officials at the event marking the National Identity Day celebration.

Minutes after Bawa was assisted to his seat on Thursday, the anti-graft agency boss slumped and was immediately rushed out of the venue for medical officials to attend to him.

Before the chairman slumped, he was talking about a suspect that the commission officials arrested in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, with over 116 Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards and was about to further reveal more details on it when the incident happened.

Bawa had stopped talking and covered his face with his right palm after he became uncomfortable and could not express himself, saying, “Please, excuse me, I can’t continue.”

Reacting to the incident, EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed that the chairman has been treated by medical experts and could be back to continue his duties at the headquarters.

Uwujaren, through a statement to The Guild, titled: Bawa Is Hale and Hearty, assured the public that the chairman was physically okay to carry out his tasks.

The statement reads: “The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa is hale and hearty.

“This clarification became necessary following an incident today September 16, 2021 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja where he was giving a goodwill message to the National Identity Day celebration, felt unwell, and had to return to his seat. He has since received medical attention and is due back at his desk”.
