U.K bans transgender girls from female group

The UK organisation that oversees Girl Guide groups has announced that transgender girls must leave the organisation by September.

This follows a December statement from Girlguiding that it would no longer accept biological boys who identify as girls as new members.

The move comes in response to a 2025 Supreme Court ruling stating that “sex” in equality law refers to biological sex.

Girlguiding said the September deadline allows affected members and their families “time to plan, prepare, access support, and decide when they feel ready to leave.”

By that date, any trans girl or trans woman volunteering in a women-only role will need to move to a role open to all volunteers, including males and females.

The organisation has around 300,000 members aged four to 18, across Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers, and approximately 80,000 volunteers.

Girlguiding noted that it does not know how many members or volunteers will be affected, as it does not collect gender identity information.

The organisation reiterated that it remains “committed to standing up for the rights, safety and dignity of girls and women, and to supporting marginalised communities, including LGBTQ+ people, to improve the lives of girls.”

Campaign group Trans+ Solidarity Alliance called the announcement “heartbreaking for the children and volunteer leaders that hold Girlguiding together.” It added: “Inclusive organisations being bullied into excluding people against their will is a profound failure of this Government to live up to its promises to the trans community.”

In related news, it was also announced in December that transgender women will be banned from joining the Women’s Institute starting April.
