Two female workers at a Zobo processing factory in Kano have been pronounced dead after drowning in a local pool in the Gezawa area of the state.
As learnt, the victims, said to be inexperienced swimmers, had gone to the local pool after their night shift to take a quick bath when they suddenly drowned.
According to eyewitnesses, the town vigilantes, who were alerted by the residents cries for help, tried to save them but had to put out a distress call to the Kano State Fire Service after several attempts to rescue them were abortive.
Confirming this development in a statement made by the State’s Fire Service on Wednesday, it was stated that the incident occurred in the late hours of yesterday when both workers closed for the day.
The agency’s spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, disclosed that it received a distress call around 11:15 a.m. from the commander of a local vigilante group, prompting an urgent rescue response.
Abdullahi stated further that search efforts commenced immediately after they arrived at the scene, and their lifeless bodies were eventually discovered and retrieved.
“The victims had reportedly entered the water to wash up after work before they started going to their homes. However, the current of the water was too high, which led to their drowning” he said.
The agency’s spokesperson, meanwhile, noted that the corpses had been handed over to the Gezawa Police Division for further investigation, including identifying the victims, as their names were unknown.
