Two children drown inside Bauchi river

Two young boys have lost their lives after drowning in a river in Bauchi, cutting short their lives and sending shockwaves through their community.

The victims, identified as 12-year-old Saminu Mohammed and 11-year-old Tanimu Danladi, were reported to have gone swimming when they got caught in the high current of the river.

Bauchi State police said the boys, both from Gudum Sayawa, could not be rescued despite prompt intervention by community members.

Moreover, the police confirmed that officers arrived quickly at the scene and transported the children to the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, where medical personnel pronounced them dead.

“We responded immediately, but unfortunately, the boys could not be saved,” Bauchi police spokesperson Nafiu Habib said on Tuesday.

Following the tragedy, the bodies were handed over to their families for burial, while a formal investigation has been launched to understand the circumstances that led to the drowning.

Local residents have since called for increased safety measures around the river to prevent similar incidents in the future.
