Trump defies Supreme court’s ruling on global tariff policy

By Helen Okoli.

The United States Trade Representative has reaffirmed that President Donald Trump’s overarching tariff policy remains fully intact, even after a recent Supreme Court ruling invalidated some of the legal bases previously used to impose import duties.

This assurance comes as the administration announces a new global tariff rate, initially set at 10 percent and later increased to 15 percent, designed to continue protecting American industries.

The statements were made during television interviews yesterday, with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer appearing on ABC News and CBS, following the Supreme Court decision handed down on Friday in Washington, DC.

Greer explained that the administration is maintaining policy continuity to safeguard domestic markets, address trade imbalances, and retain leverage in international negotiations. Only the statutory mechanisms for implementing tariffs will change to comply with the judicial ruling.

“The legal tools to implement it might change, but the policy hasn’t changed,” Greer told ABC News. “The policy hasn’t changed. The legal tools that implement it may change, but the policy hasn’t changed,” he added, emphasizing that the approach gives US businesses leverage in global trade.

He further noted that President Trump has long campaigned on tariffs and protecting American industry, and the administration remains committed to these objectives.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed the sentiment, stating: “Tariff revenue will be unchanged this year and in the future.”

Greer also highlighted that the administration has been in contact with foreign trading partners, noting that they are satisfied with current tariff arrangements and do not expect changes.

This approach underscores the administration’s commitment to existing trade agreements with allies such as the UK and EU, while carefully navigating the Supreme Court’s ruling on emergency-based tariffs.
