Tinubu and Afenifere’s 2023 endorsement

By Kunle Awosiyan

It was a torn page of a news magazine. What attracted me to the material was a picture of the 70th birthday of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and a published lecture by a Ghanaian Scholar, Tetega. I cannot remember his first name.
Tetega started his presentation by first measuring the greatness of Awolowo. He said, “The greatness of a man should be measured from the depth he arose’.
He dug to the roots of Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo. He began to measure this giant of a man and could not finish the measurement in the lecture. We are still measuring how great Awo is.
Awolowo was a man of various dimensions, shapes, and sizes. Tetega could not finish one shape in his lecture. We see Awolowo from different angles and every writer measures him by his or her own spiritual, physical and intellectual depths. The deeper you are, the deeper you know about Awo.
Tonight, the Afenifere Anthem as rendered by respected Yoruba elders who stood beside Pa Reuben Fasoranti in Akure when the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the Afenifere Leader shook my heart.
Awo should be happy too.
It was nostalgic to hear one of the line, “Bí a se bí ẹrú ni a bí ọmọ”. All men are created equal. This line summarises the idea behind Afenifere, which of course a few members of the group do not really believe in anymore.
If Tinubu should be measured from the depth he rose, there is no doubt that he is taller than many who are searching for his roots today. Unlike many favoured men who want Tinubu’s head inside the plate, he rose from nothing, from nowhere to become something in this world.
Tinubu has got a very deep root, which is going to be difficult for his critics to uproot and check perhaps to know the specie of seeds that actually germinated to become this one-man riot squad, former Lagos State Governor and now the APC presidential candidate.
As they search for the root, the tree continues to grow bigger and its branches spread from south to north. Tinubu’s visit to Fasoranti on Sunday demonstrates how organized he is and the method he is using to expand his network.
Tinubu’s idea of leadership goes beyond issuing press statements like a group of Afenifere led by Pa Ayo Adebanjo to announce their support for Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
One had expected Afenifere to organize a Town Hall meeting where all presidential candidates would present their agendas, instead, a leader just went to the press to endorse a candidate.
However, in his wisdom, Tinubu took his manifesto to Akure. There is no bigger virtue than this. While other ethnic leaders had invited him earlier to present his agenda, BAT thought it wise to visit his own ethnic leaders as a sign of respect.
Of course, he got the blessing as Fasoranti lay his hands on him and wished him a glorious outing in the 2023 presidential election. BAT ride on pls.
