The Thailand Government has lifted its imposed ban on afternoon sales of alcohol allowing consumers of its purchase in a six-month trial period.

The Asian country, in the earlier enforcement, stipulated that liquor sale is prohibited from bars and other purveyors, however, the ruling has been eased, the government stating consumers sellers can begin its sales excluding religious days, for a six-month trial period.

The government held the decades old ban imposed from 2 to 5pm daily due to reports of its consumption by government employees during work hours, will now be eased from 11am till midnight, as stated by Prime Minister, Sophon Saram on Wednesday.

Saram disclosed that the new directive will be monitored by a set up committee to inspect its impact.

”In the past, there were concerns that government employees would sneak out to drink, but it’s a different time now.”

Reports state that Thailand, before the initial ban, was ranked as the most consuming alcohol country in Asia. In addition, it was also ranked as the most with traffic deaths, with nearly 33,000 casualties recorded from 2009 to 2023, as relayed by the public health ministry.
