Global e-commerce platform Temu has assured Nigerian users that it will strengthen the protection of their personal information, following an investigation by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) into alleged violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
The NDPC said the probe was prompted by concerns about how Temu collects, processes, stores, and transfers personal data belonging to Nigerians. The review seeks to determine the platform’s compliance with legal requirements, including transparency, data minimization, duty of care, and cross-border data transfers.
Temu responded on Tuesday, emphasizing that safeguarding user privacy is a core priority. The company reaffirmed its commitment to complying with applicable laws and regulations and pledged to engage constructively with Nigerian authorities to address any issues arising from the investigation.
Since entering the Nigerian market in late 2024, Temu has experienced rapid growth, fueled by low-priced products, aggressive marketing campaigns, and a mobile-first shopping model, which has attracted millions of local users in a short period.
The NDPC said its assessment will examine key aspects of Temu’s operations to ensure that personal information is handled lawfully and securely.
The regulator stressed that the exercise is part of its broader mandate to regulate data processing activities and protect the privacy rights of Nigerians as digital commerce continues to expand.
The commission warned that organizations found to be processing personal data in violation of the law risk enforcement actions, including sanctions and penalties.
It added that the investigation into Temu is ongoing and that appropriate measures will be taken upon its conclusion, in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
