Teacher, passenger die after auto crash in Lagos

A public secondary school teacher under the Lagos State Government employ, identified as Ayodeji Oyedotun, and a yet-to-be-identified individual have been reported dead following an auto crash that occurred around Iyana Meiran bus stop, along the Lagos–Abeokuta expressway.

Oyedotun, who was deployed to District Senior College, Meiran after his recruitment, was on his way to resume duty when the accident occurred.

Aside from the two deceased, three other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries after the multiple auto crashes involving a mini bus popularly called korope, and four tricycles, which was attributed to the Dangote silo mixer truck driver’s decision on the road.

It was learnt that the accident occurred on Wednesday, before 7 am, when the Dangote truck driver, while traveling on the road at a high speed, suffered a brake failure and consequently lost control of the vehicle.

The LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who confirmed the development through a statement released by the Command spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed that the two deceased persons have been handed over to the Lagos Police Command for investigation.

Bakare-Oki added that the truck driver, who absconded after realizing the offence committed, rammed into a commercial mini-bus with number plate EPP 541 YF and four tricycles with number plates KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP.

Bakare-Oki expressed deep sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing the injured victims a speedy and full recovery.

He reiterated the Agency’s unwavering commitment to the preservation of lives and property on Lagos roads, saying the critical obligation of motorists, particularly truck drivers, is to ensure their braking systems and other vital mechanical components are thoroughly inspected and certified roadworthy before embarking on any journey.

The LASTMA boss further admonished drivers to adhere strictly to government-regulated speed limits, stressing that mechanical negligence and excessive speeding remain persistent and avoidable causes of fatal road crashes.
