TCN announces four-day power outage in Ondo

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a planned four-day interruption of electricity supply in parts of Ondo State following a scheduled preventive maintenance exercise at the Ife/Ondo 330/132kV and 132/33kV Transmission Substation, slated to run from Monday, February 2, to Thursday, February 5, 2026, as part of efforts to enhance the reliability and efficiency of power transmission in the affected areas.

The planned outage, according to the company, arose from the need to address ageing transmission infrastructure at the Ife/Ondo substation, following internal technical assessments which indicated the necessity for urgent maintenance to prevent future system failures and improve overall grid performance.

TCN identified the maintenance location as the Ife/Ondo Transmission Substation, while the exercise will be executed by its appointed contractor. The work is scheduled to take place daily between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and will involve critical upgrades on the Ife/Ondo 330/132kV and 132/33kV transmission lines servicing Ondo and neighboring communities.

In a statement issued on Monday via its official X handle, the company stated, “The maintenance will involve the decommissioning of an obsolete wave trap and the installation of a new one at the Ife/Ondo substation, alongside the replacement of existing single-circuit towers on the Ife/Ondo 132/33kV line with modern double-circuit towers.”

TCN explained that the scope of work would require a temporary shutdown of bulk power supply to enable safe execution of the upgrades, adding that the outage would consequently prevent the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) from delivering electricity to customers in Okitipupa, Ondo, and surrounding areas during the maintenance period.

Speaking on behalf of the company, TCN management reaffirmed that the maintenance exercise aligns with its statutory mandate to operate, maintain, and expand the national transmission network, stressing that such planned outages are necessary to ensure long-term system stability and reduce the risk of unplanned collapses.

The company advised electricity consumers, distribution companies, and other stakeholders to make adequate arrangements during the period of the outage, noting that all procedures guiding transmission maintenance and safety standards would be strictly observed throughout the exercise.

TCN assured that normal bulk electricity supply would be restored immediately upon completion of the maintenance works, while reiterating its commitment to strengthening the national grid and delivering a more stable and efficient power supply across the country
