Sowore: Soyinka, Falana, others can’t intimidate us to release him- DSS

By Olawale Abdul-Fatah

The Department of State Services (DSS) has stressed that actions and statements from eminent Nigerians that had trailed the continued detention of Convener, Revolution Now, Omoloye Sowore, will not intimidate the security services to making hasty decision.

DSS added that even the action of Sowore’s lawyer, Femi Falana, who has an existing close relationship with the Director-General of the security service but allegedly resulted into hiring hoodlums to subvert the Service and other state authorities will not make it bend it stance on conditions for the RevolutionNow Convener.

Among the eminent Nigerians that have condemned the action of the DSS was Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, who raised concerns over the actions of the security outfit to the protesters and demanded release of the detained activist.

The security services, in a statement released on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya, argued that his officers never acted unruly during the protest but were rather preventing breakdown of law and order that could have occurred during the protest that lasted for several minutes.

It said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the Service restates its commitment to the rule of law and particularly respect to the Court.

The DSS, however said, even though it would continuously call for calm but “will not be intimidated or harassed into hasty actions”.

According to DSS, it is only appropriate that those who stood surety for SOWORE present themselves and have him released to them.  It is even more disappointing that Femi Falana, who is a senior lawyer, would wrongly guide his client and supporters.

“He is rather playing to the gallery and mobilizing miscreants to subvert the Service and other state authorities. He has excellent relationship with the DGSS.  But in the circumstance, he has refused to reach out to him over the case like he had on previously related ones.

The DSS reassured the public that it would not waste a second to release Sowore if the proper processes were followed, saying, Falana sure, knows what these are.

It stressed that its officers would not relent in putting up the show it did recently in defence of their facility when anyone makes unruly attempts to forcefully break into the place and effect the release of Sowore.
