Sokoto ex-Gov defects to ADC amid PDP crisis

The former Governor of Sokoto State and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid deepening internal crises within the opposition party.

Tambuwal said his decision followed extensive consultations with political allies and supporters, as well as careful reflection on the current state of the PDP.

According to him, recurring leadership disputes and persistent divisions within the party have gradually eroded the unity and direction that once defined it as a formidable political force.

In a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, the former governor said the situation made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party despite the significant role it played in shaping his political career.

“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and a clear commitment to national development,” Tambuwal said.

He acknowledged that the PDP provided him the opportunity to serve the country in several capacities, including as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as governor of Sokoto State.

However, he noted that the persistent internal wrangling within the party compelled him to seek a new political platform that aligns with his vision for national development.

Tambuwal also confirmed that he had formally submitted his resignation from the PDP in writing to his ward chairman before announcing his new political alignment.

He further disclosed that he joined the African Democratic Congress alongside several associates and supporters, expressing optimism that the party offers a credible platform for political engagement.
