A canoe accident in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has left six people dead, with one passenger still unaccounted for.
The tragedy occurred when a canoe transporting 11 passengers from a rice farm in Chegama Village to Rwakwa Village capsized, throwing everyone onboard into the river.
Local divers and police swiftly responded, managing to rescue four individuals.
Unfortunately, six others—Zaliya Aliyu, Hajara Mohammed, Amina Yakotsu, Fatima Ahmed, Lare Idris, and Ahmed Mohammed—lost their lives in the accident, which occurred on March 16, 2025.
Villagers told newsmen of the tragic incident on Tuesday, March 18, stating that The deceased bodies were later recovered and buried following Islamic customs.
Search efforts are still underway to locate the remaining missing passenger, a female, as authorities and local volunteers continue their rescue mission.
