Atleast seven children were reported to have died and scores of others sustained different degrees of burns following an explosion that rocked Magami village in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
As gathered, while the six died instantly, the other child was confirmed dead by medical officials at the hospital where they were rushed after the explosion occurred.
It was learnt that the children were in the bush sourcing for firewood when they picked up an explosive device and began to play with it before the device exploded.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Abubakar Dauran, said that the injured were immediately rushed to a hospital in Gusau, the state capital, for quick medical attention.
Dauran, while disclosing that measures were already in place to prevent future occurrences, explained that the children were unaware of the device worth and damage it could cause before picking it.
According to him, the victims went to the bush in search of firewood when they picked an explosive device and began playing with it, and shortly after, it exploded.
