Police probes Lagos DPO for assaulting motorist

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the conduct of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Olosan Police Station in Mushin, CSP Ayanwale Ayodeji, following allegations of intimidation and abuse of power made by a motorist.

The allegation surfaced online after a social media user raised concerns over the DPO’s handling of a minor road accident.

According to the viral post, the incident began when a motorist’s vehicle brushed against that of a friend of the DPO.

The driver reportedly offered to pay for the cost of repairs immediately but was allegedly threatened with arrest and imprisonment by the officer, who was said to have insisted the man would “rot in jail.”

The post further alleged that the DPO claimed he would not heed even the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) if the matter were escalated.

The social media user, identified as Akin Akinwale and known on X as @mrlurvy, said the confrontation occurred on Tuesday and accused the officer of using his authority to intimidate the motorist.

In response to the online outcry, the Police Complaint Response Unit (Police CRU) issued a preliminary account of the incident.

According to Police CRU, the accident occurred on January 19, when one Ishola Wasiu, who was driving an Acura MDX with registration number KSF 615 JN, swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and struck a parked blue Peugeot 306 along Oye Street.

Both parties were reportedly taken to the police station, where statements were obtained and efforts were made to resolve the matter amicably. However, after several hours of discussion, the parties were unable to reach an agreement.

In its statement, Police CRU said the DPO intervened to explore alternative means of resolving the dispute, countering claims that he refused to listen to intervention, including that of the IGP.

Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the command had commenced an investigation into the complaint to establish the facts and determine appropriate action.

“The Command is looking into the matter,” Hundeyin said, adding that investigations were ongoing to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the investigation continues, residents have called for transparency and fairness, urging the police to handle the case impartially in order to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
