The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a uniformed officer being assaulted by a mob over an allegation of theft.
The circulating clip shows the officer bloodied and overwhelmed as voices accuse him of stealing, with numerous bystanders recording the confrontation and adding to the chaos. Another policeman is seen attempting to reach the distressed officer while the crowd grows increasingly hostile, shouting “Ole!” as commuters move around the scene.
Details about the alleged theft and events leading up to the mob attack remain unclear, and the identity of the officer has not yet been confirmed.
Reacting to the clip, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said the command had begun efforts to uncover the facts and verify the officer involved.
According to her, “The Lagos Command has seen the viral video. We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow soon.”
The Nigeria Police Force has repeatedly cautioned against mob action, reminding citizens that accusations against civilians or security officers must be handled through lawful procedures rather than violent attacks.
