A Police Inspector, Bassey Asuquo, has been reported to have committed suicide while on special duty in Sarkin-Pawa, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.
Asuquo, who was said to be attached to the 28 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Umuahia, Abia State, was said to have been deployed to the state for a special assignment.
Before commiting suicide yesterday at about 2:00 am, the law enforcement officer had been reported to be behaving abnormally before the incident.
As a precautionary measure, his Unit Commander reportedly directed that Inspector Asuquo’s rifle be retrieved and kept in the armoury at the Sarkin-Pawa Police Division.
However, further investigation revealed that the deceased officer gained access to a rifle belonging to another officer who was asleep at the time.
After getting a hold to the arm, Asuquo allegedly shot himself in the head, a sound that attracted other officers to the scene where the act was committed.
The officer’s body has been deposited at the General Hospital in Sarkin-Pawa, as the Police begins investigation on the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
