The Ogun State Police Command has unveiled a new strategy to combat rising cases of motorcycle snatching and robbery, following a recent attack on a commercial motorcyclist in the state. The initiative comes after a disturbing incident reported at the Imasayi Divisional Police Headquarters.
The warning was prompted by the case of Abdulwahab Ali, a motorcyclist who was attacked and robbed by two passengers he had picked up earlier that day.
Ali stated that he picked up the suspects at 1&2 Dangote Cement Gates at 0600hrs, heading towards Balogun Village on his unregistered red Bajaj motorcycle. Upon arrival, the suspects directed him onto a narrow road, where they sprayed a liquid substance on his face, assaulted him, and rendered him unconscious.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, the assailants fled with his motorcycle and his Itel keypad phone, with the total value of the stolen items estimated at seven hundred and five thousand Naira (N705,000).
Odutola said, “Police detectives have visited the crime scene and are gathering intelligence to track down the perpetrators. No arrests have been made, but concerted efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover the stolen motorcycle.”
The Command disclosed that criminals are now using deceptive tactics to target commercial motorcyclists.
The Ogun Police Command urged commercial motorcyclists and the general public to remain vigilant, particularly when picking up passengers in remote areas.
“Criminals have devised new deceptive tactics to steal motorcycles, and awareness is crucial to prevent further occurrences,” the spokesperson emphasized.
Odutola called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any useful information about the incident or similar criminal activities to the nearest police station.
“The public’s cooperation is essential in ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state,” she said.
