Police beefs up security around Anambra ahead guber election

By Mary Odeh

To prevent a breakdown of law and order during the November 8, 2025, governorship election, Anambra State Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to step up security at identified flashpoints and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

The directive, issued from the State Command Headquarters in Awka, is part of a strategic plan to prevent political thuggery, cult-related violence, and the illegal possession of firearms, aiming to ensure a peaceful and secure election.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner’s order followed credible intelligence reports indicating that some individuals and groups acting on behalf of political interests were mobilizing youths for violent activities before and during the election period.

Orutugu warned that the Command would not tolerate any act capable of breaching public peace, intimidating voters, or disrupting the electoral process, emphasizing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that the police are tasked with protecting lives and property, safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process, and enforcing the law without fear or favour.

He urged political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and advised residents to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining law and order before, during, and after the election.
