Hours after the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, placed an indefinite ban on masquerade procession, the Nigerian Police has arrested a man for allegedly causing public unrest while parading in full masquerade attire in Uyo, the state capital.
The suspect, identified as David Effiong, was picked up by operatives following directives from the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed , who recently ordered a clampdown on activities capable of disrupting public peace.
Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, noting that Effiong and other suspects apprehended for various offences were being processed for court.
“One David Effiong, who was on the prowl with full masquerade regalia disrupting public peace, and other suspects arrested, are all on their way to court,” the statement said.
The development comes shortly after Governor Umo Eno announced a ban on public appearances of masquerades across the state, citing security concerns.
However, the arrest has sparked criticism from civil society actors and legal practitioners. A human rights lawyer, Alobi Nyambi, condemned the action, arguing that the masquerade performance did not breach any existing law.
“The young man has not committed any offence known to the law. Merely dancing ekpo masquerade does not amount to a breach of peace. You cannot victimise citizens who are traditionalists because you’re a Pastor,” Nyambi stated.
He urged lawyers to volunteer legal support for Effiong, accusing the state government of intolerance toward cultural expressions.
“Pastor Umo Eno must focus on meaningful activities to better the lot of Akwa Ibom people and not attempt to become an emperor,” he added.
The police command said Effiong will be arraigned in court as investigations continue.
