Police arrest 26 Yobe residents cutting trees illegally

The Police have arrested 26 people over offences of illegal deforestation in Yobe State.

The state’s police command found the individuals culpable of illegal free cuting and enforced their arrest as park of efforts to curb desertification in the region.

Police sources revealed that the suspects, made way into a bush, cutting down trees without official permission, an act which the state’s  authorities described as a calculated violation of it’s stipulated laws designed to protect forests and combat land degradation.

The security agency added that the arrestees, all who are residents of Garaji village in the Damaturu Local Government Area, will be prosecuted. It added, “The deliberate felling of trees not only violates the law but also threatens our ecosystem and accelerates desert encroachment.

“Such actions cannot be tolerated, and we will continue to act decisively against offenders.”

The police emphasised that the illegal activity poses a serious environmental risk and urged residents to report any unlawful destruction of natural resources.

Meanwhile, investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the case progresses, according to the police.
