Plateau varsity workers threaten 3day strike over unpaid arrears

The Joint Union of Academic Staff of Plateau State-Owned Tertiary Institutions (JUASPTI) has issued a three-day warning strike notice to the Plateau State Government over the non-implementation of agreed salary arrears.

In a letter addressed to the Head of Civil Service, the union said the decision followed the government’s failure to make a definite commitment on the payment of the 25 and 35 percent CONPCASS salary arrears owed to its members since October 2023.

The union expressed frustration over what it described as prolonged delays despite sustained engagement and patience.

The notice, dated March 16, 2026, and signed by Chairman Comrade Cirfat Yaknan Bulus and Secretary Comrade Dakyeh Mark Makims, stated that the three-day strike would commence on Tuesday if the government fails to take immediate steps to resolve the matter.

JUASPTI recalled that an earlier ultimatum issued on February 6, 2026, had expired, after which the government requested an additional two weeks to address the issue. The union said it granted the extension, along with seven extra working days, which elapsed on March 16, 2026, without any concrete outcome.

The union further noted that follow-up discussions held on March 13, 2026, failed to produce any time-bound agreement, adding that its members have shown considerable patience for nearly three years.

According to the statement, failure by the government to act within the three-day window will result in a total and indefinite strike across all affected state-owned tertiary institutions. JUASPTI also directed all chapters and members to ensure full compliance with the directive.

Copies of the notice were sent to key stakeholders, including the Commissioner for Education, governing councils of affected institutions, and security agencies in the state.
