Plateau police meet Islamic movement leader over protest rumours

The Plateau State Police Command has held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the Islamic Movement following the circulation of a voice note on social media alleging plans for a violent protest in Jos.

According to the voice note, which circulated across the state, the alleged protest, scheduled for Friday within the Jos metropolis, was to condemn the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by the United States.

However, at the meeting held at the Command Headquarters in Jos and presided over by the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, alongside senior figures of the Islamic Movement in the state, the rumour was clarified to be false.

The Islamic Movement leaders who attended the meeting assured the Commissioner that no procession or protest would take place after prayers, emphasising that members would return home to continue their religious activities peacefully.

Following this, the Commissioner reassured residents that Plateau State remains safe and secure despite the circulating rumours.

The command also stated that it has collaborated with other security agencies to form joint patrol teams and deploy officers to major areas within the Jos city centre.

In addition, intelligence gathering, patrols, and surveillance operations have been intensified across the state to prevent any potential security threats.

The Commissioner urged residents to remain calm and continue with their normal activities without fear or intimidation.
