The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the factions led by Nyesom Wike and Kabiru Turaki to open the door for reconciliation and resolve their differences, which have continued to affect the opposition party.
The appeal followed a ruling by the Court of Appeal granting the warring factions leave to settle their dispute amicably outside the courtroom after a series of legal battles stemming from the party’s national convention held in Ibadan last year.
The convention, held between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, produced outcomes expected to shape the leadership structure of the opposition party.
However, on March 9, Justice Hamma Barka Onyemenam of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the outcome of the 2025 national convention.
Earlier, the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan had adjourned the case indefinitely and urged stakeholders to resolve the crisis peacefully, particularly in view of the timetable for the 2027 general elections recently released by INEC.
The court also stated that if the parties fail to reach a settlement, they are free to return for further legal proceedings.
In response, PDP leaders signalled plans to pursue reconciliation among aggrieved stakeholders as part of broader efforts to stabilise the party ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The BoT also approved a leadership change within its structure and stressed the need for unity among party members amid the ongoing legal and political challenges confronting the party.
These decisions were contained in a communiqué issued after an expanded emergency meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees held between March 9 and March 11. The communiqué was presented by the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara.
The board expressed concern over the internal conflicts within the party, noting that the disputes had led to damaging legal battles that were undermining cohesion and the smooth administration of the PDP as the country’s leading opposition platform.
“The BoT therefore calls on all leaders and members of our party to jettison all personal and group interests and come together as one family in the overall interest of our party and the wellbeing of millions of Nigerians whose hopes are anchored on the PDP,” the communiqué stated.
As part of the decisions reached at the meeting, the board approved the appointment of former Niger State governor, Mu’azu Aliyu, as Secretary of the Board, in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution as amended in 2017.
The BoT also urged party leaders and members to set aside individual and group interests and work collectively to rebuild the party.
It further expressed appreciation to Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde for their commitment to the PDP and its future direction.
