Athletes participating in one of the venues of the 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State were thrown into panic after a gas explosion rocked the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, disrupting activities within the premises.
The deafening explosion, as gathered, forced athletes, coaches, and onlookers to abandon the facility in a frantic rush, leaving behind personal belongings and sporting equipment as they scrambled to safety amid thick smoke and growing tension.
Sources said the incident occurred when a gas truck supplying fuel to the complex’s generating set suddenly caught fire, triggering panic as people fled in different directions to avoid being caught in the blast.
According to eyewitnesses, emergency responders arrived at the scene swiftly and acted promptly to contain the situation, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the complex.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been confirmed and sporting activities at the venue, including handball, squash, and badminton, have since resumed.
