The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved the 2025 capital budget proposal of the 33 local government areas, to boost grassroots developments across the state.
The budget, according to the lawmakers, was designed to enhance infrastructural development and boost socio-economic activities across the 33 local governments.
Aside from that, the lawmakers stressed that the projects listed by the council chairmen aligned with the state government’s broader agenda for inclusive governance and balanced development.
The approval was given during plenary on Wednesday following the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and State Honour.
Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, after the approval on Wednesday, lauded the committee’s efforts and reiterated the Assembly’s resolve to strengthen oversight functions.
He urged local governments to see the approved budget as a tool for grassroots development and a means to regain public trust.
Earlier while presenting the report, the Chairman of the Committee, Akintunde Emmanuel, said the exercise was carried out in line with the Assembly’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance at the grassroots level.
He added that the committee meticulously reviewed the proposals submitted by each local government to ensure alignment with the developmental goals of the state.
Akintunde explained that the capital budget proposals cover critical sectors such as education, health, rural infrastructure, and agriculture. He emphasized that the committee prioritized projects that directly impact the lives of residents and foster sustainable development.
The lawmaker also noted that the committee engaged local government chairmen, directors of finance, and heads of departments during the budget defense sessions to ensure clarity and proper allocation of resources.
He said the interactive sessions provided insight into the priorities of each council and revealed a strong desire for improved service delivery.
In their contributions, other lawmakers commended the committee for its diligence and called for effective monitoring of budget implementation. They stressed the need for local government authorities to adhere strictly to the approved plans and ensure value for money in all capital projects.
With the approval, the local government councils can now begin implementation of their respective capital projects as captured in the 2025 fiscal year, under the supervision of the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
