Ondo Gov. pardons seven inmates on 61st birthday

The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted an outright pardon to seven inmates serving various jail terms in correctional facilities across the state, in celebration of his 61st birthday.

The decision forms part of the governor’s commitment to the rehabilitation of inmates and the transformative power of second chances.

The pardon was announced in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, who noted that it reflects the administration’s ongoing commitment to justice sector reforms.

According to the statement, the gesture builds on the clemency granted on January 1, 2026, during the New Year celebrations, when Governor Aiyedatiwa approved the release of 77 convicts based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The seven inmates were selected following a careful assessment of reports confirming genuine remorse, good behaviour, active participation in rehabilitation programmes, and strong prospects for successful reintegration into society.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Kayode Ajulo, commended the governor for what he described as a thoughtful and forward-looking decision, saying it underscores the administration’s resolve to balance accountability with mercy and foster a justice system that allows room for redemption.
