The Ogun Police Command has launched a crackdown on illegal scavengers linked to theft and vandalism across the state following the arrest of a suspect caught vandalising property by the Itele-Awori Divisional Police Headquarters.

The arrest occurred after a resident, Abiodun Wasiu, reported a case of theft involving a scavenger.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, she said, “On February 17, 2025, at about 1500hrs, Mr. Abiodun Wasiu ‘M’, a resident of No. 7 Alafia Street, Oja, Itele, reports a case of theft involving a scavenger.”

The statement further explained that Wasiu noticed an unidentified scrap dealer unlawfully removing window glasses with aluminium frames from a co-landlord’s building.

“When confronted, the suspect attempts to flee, prompting the complainant to raise an alarm. Members of the community assist in apprehending the suspect, who is then handed over to the police,” Odutola stated.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime. “The suspect confessed to the crime and is currently in police custody,” Odutola said.

The case is under investigation, and the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of legal procedures.

Following the arrest, the Ogun Police Command has intensified monitoring and enforcement actions against illegal scavengers, particularly those who engage in criminal activities under the guise of scrap dealing.

The PPRO urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

“The public should be cautious of unauthorized scavengers trespassing on properties, as many of them engage in vandalism, theft, and other unlawful acts,” she warned.

In the statement, Odutola reaffirmed the commitment of the Ogun State Police Command to ensuring the safety of lives and property.

“The Ogun State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property while taking decisive action against criminals operating under any disguise,” she said.
