Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Olabisi Onabanjo, has died at the age of 100, just three months after celebrating her birthday.
Her passing was announced by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, who disclosed that the matriarch of the Onabanjo family passed away peacefully on Monday.
“With deep regret but with gratitude to Almighty God, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026), who was called to glory on Monday, 11 January,” the family announced on Tuesday.
“We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”
Madam Onabanjo was the wife of the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, the first civilian governor of Ogun State, who served during Nigeria’s Second Republic between October 1979 and December 1983.
The late governor was also a prominent journalist, widely known for his weekly column Ayekooto, until his death in 1990.
