Obi describes Lent, Ramadan overlap as symbol of national unity

By Marycelia Agim

“As Christians and Muslims begin fasting for Lent and Ramadan, former Presidential Candidate Peter Obi described the rare convergence as a moment of shared spiritual meaning, calling it an opportunity for unity and renewal in Nigeria amid ongoing national challenges.

He noted that the overlapping sacred observances mark a rare spiritual meeting point in a nation he describes as richly endowed yet burdened by ineffective governance and deep social and economic pressures.

This alignment, he said, represents a joint period of sacrifice, reflection, and hope, offering encouragement to citizens amid insecurity, hardship, and ongoing economic challenges.

In a message on Wednesday, Obi referred to the occasion as a “Double Fast” and appealed to Nigerians across religious and regional lines to seek divine compassion for the nation’s recovery.

He emphasized that devotion should be paired with action, urging people to practise charity, forgiveness, and restraint—principles he noted are central to both faith traditions.

Obi added that the season provides an opportunity for a spiritual reset and renewed commitment to common humanity, expressing optimism that it could inspire lasting harmony and togetherness.

Extending greetings to adherents of both religions, he said, “A Holy Lent and Ramadan Kareem to all,” stressing that united prayers and shared resolve could help pave the way for a transformed Nigeria.
