Obi calls for urgent security action after Kwara massacre

By Mary Odeh

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for urgent security measures following recent violent attacks in Kwara State that reportedly left scores of people dead.

Obi expressed deep sorrow over the killings, which allegedly claimed around 150 lives across several communities, describing the incident as both a tragic loss of innocent lives and a profound national failure.

The attacks took place in the Woro and Nuku communities of Kwara State, where gunmen reportedly opened fire on residents, according to a statement Obi posted on his official X account on Thursday.

He noted that the recurring violence across the country, now comparable to situations in some war-torn nations, underscores the urgent need for Nigeria to declare a full-scale war on insecurity threatening lives and property.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that every loss of innocent life is unacceptable and urged the government to deploy all available resources to end the scourge of violence.

Obi also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the affected communities, and the government and people of Kwara State.

He further called on relevant authorities to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice and to reassure Nigerians that their lives matter and must be adequately protected.
