The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has met with President Bola Tinubu, inside the Presidential Villa in Abuja, a move that is already stirring political interest amid ongoing conversations on who succeed the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, after 2027.
The meeting came at a time when political observers and stakeholders are increasingly speculating about potential successors to Sanwo-Olu, whose tenure has fueled discussions about the next phase of leadership in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
As gathered, the discussion between the President and the Speaker came after the search for the next governor was narrowed to three personalities, the incumbent deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the former governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who spent one term, and the new arrival, Samuel Ajose, who has been the choice of millions of Lagos residents from Badagry division of the state.
In a statement released after the closed-door engagement, Obasa described the talks as “productive,” emphasizing a shared commitment to strengthening governance and delivering tangible outcomes for citizens.
He noted that the discussions centered on sustaining Lagos State’s development trajectory while aligning more closely with federal priorities.
“It was a productive meeting focused on strengthening governance, delivering better outcomes for our people, and sustaining the progress Lagos is known for,” the Speaker added.
Obasa reaffirmed the Lagos State House of Assembly’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Presidency, stressing that legislative support would remain critical in advancing policies that directly impact livelihoods.
“As Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, I want to assure you that we remain fully committed to working closely with the Presidency to drive policies that directly impact lives and move our state and nation forward,” he added.
While the Speaker did not directly address the growing debate over who succeeds Sanwo-Olu, political analysts say the timing of the meeting signals strategic consultations within the ruling establishment. Lagos, widely regarded as Nigeria’s political and economic nerve center, has historically played a pivotal role in shaping national leadership dynamics.
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, is seen as a central figure in determining the state’s political direction, particularly within the ruling party’s structure.
