Obalende bus park gets completion date

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, has set completion timeline for the redevelopment of the Obalende Bus Park, as plans advance to transform the facility into a modern and well-structured transport hub begins.

The 21 weeks timeframe, according to MTN, would begin from the date work kick-off on the project expected to change the axis completely.

This redevelopment will be carried out in three major components, comprising the Main Bus Park, Bus Park 2, and ancillary facilities such as a loading bay and a park garden.

The initiative, to be executed through a public-private partnership with MTN Nigeria, aims to decongest the Obalende transport corridor while improving efficiency, safety and commuter experience.

The timeline was disclosed on yesterday during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting convened by the Lagos state government to brief relevant parties on the scope and implementation strategy of the proposed redevelopment project.

Speaking at the meeting, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, stressed the importance of maximizing the available space to accommodate all categories of commercial buses operating within the Obalende axis.

He noted that the success and sustainability of the project would depend largely on the provision of adequate, functional and well-coordinated facilities.

Giwa also called for the constitution of a small technical committee to address critical project details, ensure proper inter-agency coordination and facilitate seamless implementation.

The governor’s aide further underscored the need for continuous engagement with transport unions throughout the project lifecycle to secure buy-in and promote smooth operations.

The meeting attracted key stakeholders across government agencies and the private sector, including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi Akodu; the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; the Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area, Hon. Bola Oladunjoye; the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadagesin; and the General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola.
