NYSC relocates Corp members from Benue trouble zones

By Jolayemi Olakunle

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has migrated corps members out of high-risk communities in Benue state, following a series of deadly attacks that has left over 150 people dead and dozens of others hospitalized after sustaining varying degrees of injuries during different attacks.

NYSC said that the decision to relocate the young Nigerians was taken to protect the Corp members from being attacked by gunmen terrorizing Yelewata, Daudu communities and other neighbouring towns in the state.

The NYSC Benue State Coordinator, Veronica Garba, who disclosed this to newsmen in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, Benue State, said the affected corps members were safely evacuated under security escort.Garba

The coordinator said that upon receiving reports of the crisis, the management promptly contacted the police, who facilitated the evacuation of corps members from both Yelewata and Daudu communities.

These facilities include residences managed by the Nigeria Corpers Christian Fellowship (NCCF), National Association of Catholic Corps Members (NACCM), and the Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN).

“We do not joke with the safety of our corps members because we take them as our children so as soon as we heard about the crisis, we contacted the Commissioner of Police, who detailed his officers to help us evacuate our corps members.”

“We then did our head count and none were missing, so we arranged with the heads of all the family houses and got them settled in Makurdi for now pending when the situation will improve”, she stated.

She urged parents not to panic, that the situation is under control as security chiefs have been mobilised to restore peace in the state.

“Above all, God, who is the safest security, is everywhere; He is with your children too”, Garba said.

He disclosed this hours after President Bola Tinubu visited Makurdi, the state capital yesterday, directing security agencies to bolster security in affected communities and apprehend those behind the deadly attacks.
