NUT orders Abuja teachers to join ongoing strike

By Marycelia Agim

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory has directed its members in public primary and secondary schools to fully comply with an ongoing industrial action.

The directive places teachers within a growing coalition of unions demanding the resolution of long-standing welfare grievances, as labour leaders intensify pressure on authorities to address unresolved obligations.

Union officials said the decision was taken despite earlier concerns about the organisation of the action, noting that unity among workers had become inevitable following developments at the national labour level.

In a communiquƩ jointly signed by the chairman, Abdullahi Shafas, secretary Margaret Jethro, and publicity secretary Ibukun Adekeye on Monday, the union said teachers would down tools starting the same day in compliance with a directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

ā€œAll teachers in FCT primary and secondary schools are to stay away from classrooms starting Monday,ā€ the communiquĆ© stated, adding that members within the city centre and surrounding areas are to assemble at the National Industrial Court, Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Abuja, by 7:00 a.m.

According to the union, the gathering is intended to demonstrate solidarity during the hearing of a court case instituted against the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), which is coordinating the wider industrial action across the territory.

The union reaffirmed its resolve to continue engaging relevant authorities until teachers’ demands are met, declaring: ā€œIn pursuit of justice and to demonstrate our collective resolve, we must stand together. A people united can never be defeated.ā€

The strike forms part of an indefinite action that began on January 19, involving workers under JUAC over unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid entitlements, deductions, and other conditions they say continue to undermine morale and productivity.
