Northern youths have distanced themselves from plans by some political actors to organise a protest demanding the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges.
According to them, such moves only serve the interests of a few individuals seeking attention, rather than the collective progress of Nigerian youths who are focused on unity and national development.
The Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Forum (NNYLF) said it would not support any demonstration that attempts to undermine the judicial process or destabilise the country.
Speaking later at a press briefing in Abuja, the group’s president, Murtala Gamji, criticised those behind the planned protest, describing it as “a desperate act by politicians out of touch with the real issues facing young Nigerians.”
Gamji noted that Nnamdi Kanu’s case remains before the courts and should not be influenced by public demonstrations or political propaganda.
“The matter is before the judiciary, and we must allow the law to take its course. Those behind this so-called protest are only trying to exploit the emotions of the public for personal and political gain,” he said.
Rather than joining such agitations, Gamji revealed that the NNYLF is preparing for a three-day unity march in Abuja to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
The march, scheduled for October 21 to 23, will focus on promoting national unity and highlighting policies that benefit young people.
“This is a message of hope and solidarity to every Nigerian youth, irrespective of region or politics,” he said. “The President’s student loan policy, for instance, is a step in the right direction and deserves commendation.”
He also disclosed that several youth organisations, including the Peace Corps, Man O’ War, Boys’ Brigade, and the Civilian Joint Task Force, have pledged to participate in the solidarity event.
Gamji emphasised that the goal of the NNYLF’s march is to strengthen the bond among Nigerian youths and encourage peaceful coexistence.
“We want to remind our leaders and fellow citizens that what binds us together as Nigerians is stronger than what divides us,” he added.
