Nigerian police, banks partner on ending cyber crime

By Helen Okoli.

In a bid to curb the rising wave of cybercrime, the Nigerian Police have partnered with major banks to strengthen online security, protect customers’ funds, and enhance efforts to detect, prevent, and prosecute fraudsters across the country.

The partnership aims to foster timely reporting of incidents, capacity building, and inter-agency coordination with bodies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), closing enforcement gaps and deterring cybercriminals more effectively.

The collaboration was formalized during a meeting at the NPF-NCCC Headquarters in Abuja, attended by a high-level delegation from the Body of Bank Chief Executive Officers in Nigeria.

Welcoming the delegation, the Director of the Centre, CP Ifeanyi Henry, reaffirmed the NPF-NCCC’s commitment to combating cybercrime both nationally and internationally through intelligence-driven policing, digital forensics, and strategic partnerships.

Henry highlighted the Centre’s core mandates, which include investigating and supporting the prosecution of cybercrime cases, conducting digital forensic examinations, monitoring social media, and gathering cyber intelligence.

He stressed that collaboration with financial institutions is critical, as financial systems are often exploited by cybercriminals.

Head of the delegation, Nixon Iwedi, ACIB, Chairman of the Body of Bank Chief Executive Officers in Nigeria and Managing Director/CEO of Signature Bank, said the visit was a follow-up to earlier engagements with the Inspector-General of Police in Lagos.

He noted it was aimed at strengthening cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and the banking sector in tackling cybercrime and financial fraud.

Iwedi commended the enforcement agency, particularly the NPF-NCCC, for its professionalism, resilience, and sustained efforts in combating cybercriminal activities both within Nigeria and across international borders.
